Alan Devine came to our School on the 4th of October to talk to us about public speaking. After a weird and awkward introduction, he told us about the art of talking in front of people, asking us which we preferred, the awkward and shy person or the more outgoing and confident Alan we had just seen. He then told us about how important first impressions are, whether it on be stage or in a job interview. He then asked us to tell a joke, by standing tall, arms down by your sides and by using 'Granny Devines smile.'
When we came back from lunch, we then proceeded to do some activities and games. We had to say "Old King Cole, was a merry old soul, and a merry old soul was he" while also putting actions to our words. This showed us how important gestures are to our audience, capturing their attention. After that he we had to copy gestures from the 'machine' while multi tasking, by answering questions and looking at our fellow class mates. We also have to come up with a speech for the following Friday, by reciting a speech we wrote, on a topic. I chose to talk about 'How much I dislike making a speech', I know, ironic isn't it?. I thought that Alan was very inspirational and helped me to become more confident on public speaking.
I thought that the whole experience, was really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
