Irish Fainne.
On Wednesday the 11th of April 2018, an examiner came to Portumna Community School, to listen to each of our Irish Fainnes. For our project, we researched online the history of our grandparents and the stories they had to tell. For my project, I researched stories about 'Father Toomeys Well' and how the well was said to grant a wish/luck to anyone who came to see it.
My project was based in Waterford, Dungaravan where my granny grew up. I couldn't find her on Duchas, so I decided to do my project on someone else of the same surname.
It was an oral exam and although some words were hard to say in Irish, I really enjoyed the experience. My piece was a page long and at the break, I played piano. I played Woodbrook by Michael O'Suillieabhain and I was happy with the way it turned out. Although nerve racking, I am really happy I got my Fainne, as it can come in handy for my Irish orals.
At the end, we were each rewarded with a certificate with our Irish name on it, and a small gold badge, that we could wear on our school jumper.
I would recommend anyone to go for the Fainne, as it gives a great opportunity for students to speak another language, to stand up and present, but also to help improve Irish verbal talking.
